Rt Hon Sadiq Khan MP, Minister of State for Transport



Sadiq Khan was appointed as the Minister of State for Transport on 8 June 2009.

This follows his tenures as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and as a Minister in the Government Whip's Office where he had special responsibility for managing Ministry of Justice legislation. Previously he was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Honourable Jack Straw MP, who was then Leader of the House of Commons. Sadiq was a member of the prestigious Public Accounts Select Committee between 2005 and 2007.

Sadiq was a Human Rights solicitor before entering parliament. He also co-founded a Human Rights firm and was chair of Liberty (NCCL) for many years. He was also a visiting lecturer at University of North London and London Metropolitan University, and is a former governor of South Thames FE College.

Sadiq is a Governor of two primary schools including the one he attended as a child (since 1993) and the country's first purpose built Islamic ethos primary school (since 2004).

Sadiq was a Councillor for Tooting ward in the London Borough of Wandsworth from 1994 until 2006 and was made an honorary Alderman in 2006.

Sadiq was born in St George's Hospital in Tooting in 1970. Sadiq is an avid supporter of Liverpool Football Club and Surrey County Cricket Club respectively. Mr Khan is married and has two daughters.

Robert Wright, Transport Correspondent, Financial Times



Robert Wright has been transport correspondent of the Financial Times since July 2003. During that time, he has developed considerably the paper's coverage of all forms of surface transport, but has concentrated particularly on rail. He has written extensively about the UK rail system, particularly the reforms introduced under the Railways Act 2005 and the industry's finances. He has also covered extensively the European and North American rail sectors, as well as shipping and road policy issues. He was named Transport Correspondent of the Year at the National Transport Awards in 2006 and 2008 and was News Journalist of the Year at the 2008 Seahorse Club Awards, for maritime reporting.

Before becoming transport correspondent, he was the correspondent for the FT and Economist in Budapest from 1999 until July 2003, covering issues as diverse as the Hungarian economy, the Kosovo war and the 1999 Turkish earthquake.

From 1997 to 1999, he worked in London for the Financial Times, undertaking a number of reporting assignments. He previously worked for three years for The Scotsman and, before that, for a number of Scottish dailies. He lives in London, where he cycles nearly everywhere.

Rt Hon Stephen Hammond MP, Shadow Conservative Transport Minister



After graduating in Economics, Stephen began a career in finance at a leading fund management house and subsequently worked for major investment banks. He was appointed a Director of the Equities division of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson in 1994 and four years later joined Commerzbank Securities. In 2000 he was promoted to Director, Pan European Research, with responsibility for seventy professionals based in London and across Europe.

Stephen was as elected a Councillor in Wimbledon in 2002 - polling the highest vote of any candidate in the borough. He became Deputy Group Leader and a member of the Overview and Scrutiny Commission. In May 2005 Stephen was elected Member of Parliament for Wimbledon. He was promoted to the front bench as Shadow Minister for Transport in December of the same year. He has specific responsibility for Rail and Buses.

John Jarvis, Transport Director, The Northern Way



John Jarvis is Transport Director for the Northern Way and is based at Yorkshire Forward, who lead for the Northern Way on transport on behalf of the three Northern Regional Development Agencies.

John has performed this role since February 2005, on secondment from the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber and the Department for Communities and Local Government.  During his time with the Northern Way, John has established the Northern Transport Compact under the chairmanship of Professor David Begg with the objective of identifying the type, scale and location of transport interventions at the pan-northern level that will deliver the greatest productivity gain over the next 20 to 30 years. This has led to the development of the Northern Way’s Transport Strategic Direction and Short, Medium and Long Term Priorities, and work to progress strategic gaps in delivery including the case for high speed rail and business case development with Network Rail for Manchester Rail Hub as well as an expanded network of gauge-enhanced rail routes serving the North’s ports.

John‘s work has also involved contributing evidence to the Eddington Review, the Ports Policy Review, the House of Commons Transport Committee’s inquiry into the Rail White Paper, and other consultations such as the Treasury’s consultation on Aviation Duty and DfT’s on airport regulation. John has also led the Northern Way’s successful programme of early win transport projects which include the recently completed 3rd platform at Manchester Airport Station, rail access improvements to the Ports of Hull and Liverpool and the M606/M62 high occupancy vehicle lane.

Prior to his role with the Northern Way, John served on the Corporate Management Board of GOYH from the establishment of the Government Office in 1994, including as Acting Director Regeneration, Director Planning and Transport, and Director Regional Affairs.

David Brown, Director General, South Yorkshire PTE



David Brown was appointed as Director General of SYPTE in April 2008.  Prior to this he held the position of Passenger Services Director since April 2002. In that role he was responsible for strategic planning, the integration of transport modes, the delivery of the capital programme and all operational and customer information services. 

Over the last 2 years David has worked as part of the PTE Group on developing the Local Transport Bill, in particular, the provisions relating to the delivery of bus services and the governance in Integrated Transport Authority areas.

Prior to joining the PTE in September 2000, David’s career was predominantly based in the rail industry with 20 years’ experience in commercial, operational and business management positions, predominantly in regional railways businesses in the East Midlands and the North West.  David has a degree in geography, is a member of the IOD and has obtained a diploma in Company Direction from the IOD.

As part of his current role, David is a Board member of a number of Local Strategic Partnerships, which enables him to participate in the economic and housing developments in South Yorkshire.
