A selection of interactive seminar sessions, providing an opportunity for delegates to explore distinct aspects of key importance to this agenda.

Seminar A

Carbon Critical Design

Sponsored by:
Atkins

Presented by
: Andrew Love
Andrew Love joined Atkins in 2000, having previously worked at London Underground and studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge. A specialist in metro signalling and systems integration, he is currently the Head of Technology for Metro Systems. As part of his technical oversight of metro projects, he ensures that Atkins’ technical solutions have their sustainability reviewed and optimised in the same manner as their functionality and safety.  When not at work, he can often be found devising new ways to harvest rainwater.

Synopsis
This seminar describes the progress of Atkins' Rail business in responding to the need for sustainable design. It explains how the carbon load of different stages of railway asset life-cycles were identified and how the embodied energy was quantified through the structured investigation of a variety of Atkins’ ongoing projects. The results have been compared to those obtained in other international locations so the impact of local factors can be better understood, and are now being used to re-design aspects of the reference projects to minimise the embodied carbon, allowing lessons to be learnt for future projects.

Seminar B

Construction Process Integration

Sponsored by: RIB Software

Presented by:
Stephen Brunning, Managing Director, RIB Software (UK) Ltd & Eric Ostrowski
Stephen has more than 25 years of commercial, estimating, quantity surveying and project cost management experience in the international construction industry. His knowledge and expertise spans a wide range of markets, including buildings, civil infrastructure, oil and gas, rail infrastructure and residential. Under Stephen’s leadership, RIB has grown to become one of the UK’s leading providers of estimating and cost management software. He has been instrumental in securing major contracts within the rail sector, notably Atkins Rail, Network Rail, Transport for London/London Underground and Westinghouse Rail Systems.

Eric Ostrowski, Senior Consultant, RIB Software (UK) Ltd
Eric Ostrowski has over 30 years of project management, engineering and quantity surveying experience in the M&E building services, petrochemical and industrial engineering sectors. As a project manager at RIB, he provides specialist cost planning and consultancy support services to a range of clients, mainly professional quantity surveyors. Eric is a former partner of EC Harris, where he served as head of knowledge development. He has also worked for Franklin & Andrews, Currie & Brown and Oscar Faber. During the design and construction of the Channel Tunnel, Eric worked as commercial manager responsible for all external studies and consultancies relating to M&E equipment for TransManche Link (TML).

Synopsis
The seminar will provide a brief overview of how RIB is meeting clients’ requirements in the engineering and construction sector through business applications integration and by improving efficiencies in project and in-house business delivery teams. RIB has just released its next-generation estimating and project controls software product RIB iTWO (previously known as RIB CSuite). The seminar will highlight RIB’s experience of integrating applications via its standard toolkit, as well as multiple standard interfaces to SAP ERP, Autodesk Revit and Tekla Structures for design and bill of quantity generation, and bi-directional interfaces to Asta, Microsoft and Primavera project management software.

Seminar C

Northern Line Extension –Planning a new Tube Line to Battersea Power Station

Sponsored by: Parsons Brinckerhoff

Presented by: Michael Francis & Tony Whitehead
Michael Francis is the Senior Delivery Manager Tunnels for PB in UK.  He is a civil engineer, committee member of the BTS and Fellow of the Institution with more than 30 years experience in Planning, Design and Construction of major construction projects.
His experience includes tunnels for rail, highways, hydropower, clean and dirty water and high voltage cables.   For the last twelve years he has lead teams in involved in design and construction of tunnels in the London Area and in 2008 he was PB’s Project Director for the Northern Line Extension Feasibility Study.

Tony Whitehead is a former CBI Economist and HM Treasury private finance policy adviser, Tony has 20 years experience covering all aspects of the strategy, development and delivery of large scale capital projects, particularly in the fields of property development, economic regeneration, transport infrastructure and PFI/PPP. Synopsis
The seminar will include an overview of the scheme which is designed to open up and regenerate growth in this inner city area close to the heart of London and south of the river.  The speakers will set out the need case for the new metro line.  They talk about the issues involved and approach making a major project like this happen.
It will include a discussion of the significant technical challenges involved in finding a feasible route through the central London with much existing infrastructure, of dealing with challenging ground conditions, making a difficult connection with the underground tunnels at Kennington and layouts of station design.  The consideration of different options and selection of preferred route will be covered.
