LATEST NEWS: RT HON GEOFF HOON MP, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT WILL GIVE THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT PASSENGER TRANSPORT 2008

Passenger Transport 2008
will profile both the achievements to date and challenges ahead for the transport sector in implementing the delivery of the Government’s long-term strategic plan for passenger transport and the need for ‘better connectivity’.

This Conference and Exhibition will highlight, in particular, the impact of both recent Government legislation and local government devolution in driving city and regional growth and tackling both social exclusion and climate change.

This prestigious national Conference and Exhibition will bring together 300 senior decision-makers from across the public, private and Third sectors – featuring representatives from the six Passenger Transport Authorities/Executives, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, Transport for London, relevant Government agencies and Industry specialists.

Since their creation in 1968, the six Passenger Transport Executives have delivered the public transport requirements for the UK’s largest city regions, as the public transport planning and delivery bodies for their respective Passenger Transport Authorities (PTAs).

Working alongside the Department for Transport, regional, local and private sector partners, the PTA/Es aim to deliver an effective and efficient transport system;  balancing the needs of “the economy, the environment and society” – sustaining economic growth through improved productivity, reliability, environmental performance, accessibility, safety and security.

Serving approximately 13 million people and with a combined budget of more than £1 billion per year, the PTA/Es in our city regions aim to provide solutions to some of the most challenging transport problems. Good public transport provision is essential for access to vital Government services, such as education, health, employment and leisure.

Passenger Transport 2008: Planning for our Future Passenger Transport Needs provides an unique forum for debate on the core issues central to achieving progress on this agenda, outlining the essential prerequisites for effective service delivery and the priorities moving forward, with a detailed overview of both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
